Counseling for Homebound Elders

Group Counseling provided by telephone

A rigorous study of the feasibility and effectiveness of SOWN’s professionally led telephone-based support groups found that older women receiving telephone support reported reduced levels of depression compared to the control group (Winter and Gitlin, 2007).

TARGET POPULATION
Homebound, older adults living on low incomes who have elected to age in their own homes and communities.

SOCIAL ISOLATION MEASURES USED
The Patient Health Questionnaire Nine Depression Symptom Checklist (PHQ-9) and the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale (RULS).

FUNDING
Counseling is funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
